Head of the River 2025
Pushing the Boundaries of Remote Production
The Head of the River Race (HORR) is an annual display of endurance, strategy, and rowing prowess. But for Nimblecast, the 2025 edition was also a testament to the power of remote production. Covering a 7.1km live sports event including over 300 participants presents significant logistical challenges, yet we delivered seamless, high-quality live streaming all without an on-site production hub.
Seamless Remote Production Across a 7.1km Course
To ensure every key moment was captured, we deployed five strategically positioned cameras along the Tideway. Two cameras at Chiswick Bridge provided a clear view of every crew as they launched from the start, setting the tone for the race. A drone, flown from Chiswick Pier Reach, delivered sweeping aerial footage, effectively covering a 1km range from Barnes Bridge towards Hammersmith. Our Hammersmith Bridge camera caught critical overtakes around the largest bend in the course, ensuring viewers didn’t miss any action. Finally, at London Rowing Club, our last camera was positioned alongside our commentary team, allowing for dynamic live analysis as crews crossed the finish line and early finishers joined the conversation.
The commentary team featured Olympians Greg Searle and Rory Gibbs, bringing expert insight and race analysis to the coverage. Their first-hand experience at the highest levels of the sport added a depth of knowledge and excitement that resonated with both rowing enthusiasts and casual viewers alike.

100% Remote Live Sports Broadcasting
What made our prodcuction significant was the fact it was carried out remotely from our dedicated production gallery. Here, our team seamlessly cut live pictures, mixed audio, and integrated real-time graphics, without requiring an on-site setup. Unlike many competitors, who rely solely on software switching, we hard-cut our program via SDI, ensuring a robust and reliable output. We then supplement our workflow with software like vMix, enhancing the production with additional layers of flexibility and efficiency.
This particular production was also a milestone in sustainable broadcasting, as our hub was powered 100% by solar energy. By embracing renewable energy solutions, we not only delivered a high-quality production but did so with minimal environmental impact, reinforcing our commitment to innovation and sustainability.
Reliable Live Video Transmission & Connectivity
Live video transmission was handled using cellular bonded devices, which, despite being commonly perceived as SIM-only solutions, were connected to ethernet. This hybrid approach allowed for debonding the signal straight down the line while also utilizing cellular networks, ensuring a stable, high-bandwidth feed throughout the event. By leveraging these advanced remote production solutions, we eliminated the need for traditional on-site infrastructure without compromising on broadcast quality.
Our Deep-Rooted Rowing Expertise
At Nimblecast, we don’t just film rowing—we live it. With extensive experience both participating in and filming rowing events, we bring an insider’s perspective to every production. Our understanding of the sport allows us to anticipate key moments, frame the action with precision, and elevate the storytelling around rowing. This passion and expertise translate directly into our broadcasts, ensuring that every stroke, overtake, and race-defining moment is captured in the most compelling way possible.
